Description

Hiptage sericea is a plant species belonging to the family of Malpighiaceae. The genus name is derived from the combination of two Greek words that mean shortly crested, which refers to the characters of its fruits. While the species epithet is derived from the Latin word meaning silky, which refers to the indumentum of its inflorescences (Lim, 2017).  This species is endemic to Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore. In Peninsular Malaysia, this species had been recorded in Penang, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor.

The habit of this species is twining climbers, it can reach 10 m tall. The twigs are terete and reddish to yellow-brown in colour. The upper leaves’ surfaces are reddish brown to black and red-brown beneath with a thinly leathery texture. The inflorescences are generally axillary with a densely silky indumentum on the inflorescence’s surfaces. The flower is white with dense hair outside the petal. The fruits are clustered into 3 samaras and turn to glossy brown when dry.
