Description

Goniothalamus parallelivenius is a tree that grows to be up to 20 meters tall. The Ibanese ethnic group in Sarawak refers it as Selukai or Selukai Daun Besar Putih. The name parallelivenius is a combination of two Latin words, “parallelus” means parallel, and “vena” means vein, and it refers to the parallel literal vein possessed by the leaves of this species. The young twigs are dark brown, glabrous, and smooth, whereas the mature twigs are grey with slight cracking along their length. The leaves have chartaceous to subcoriaceous texture and size ranging from 30–52 cm long and 9–15 cm wide, with oblong-obovate or oblanceolate blade shape. The dried leaves are brown underneath, while the upper surface varies from brown, grey-brown, or grey-green. The midrib on the upper surface is a little bit immersed, but the lower surface is prominent and smooth. The coriaceous outer petals are ovate-oblong to ovate-lanceolate in shape measuring up to 7.5 cm long and 1.3 cm wide. On the other hand, the inner petals are ovate-lanceolate measuring about 3.0–4.5 cm long and 0.8–1.3 cm wide, coated with thick red-brown hairs. More than 20 ellipsoidal monocarps up to 3 cm long and 1.5 cm wide are produced by this species. When it dries, it turns dull dark brown with extreme wrinkles. Each monocarp contains 2–4 smooth and pale brown seeds that are about 18 mm long and 11 mm wide, and coated with scattered hair. This species is found in lowland forests, particularly limestone forests in Sarawak, Brunei, Kalimantan, and Sumatra, where the altitude is up to 650 m a.s.l. (Turner et al., 2014).
