Description

Goniothalamus phaeotrichus is a tree that can reach up to 20 m tall. The name phaeotrichus is derived from two Greek words, “phaeos” means dark or dusky brown, and “trichos” means hair, which describes the dark brown hairs coated on the twigs of this species. The dried young twigs are pale brown but difficult to discern since they are coated in very thick dark red-brown hairs.  The dried mature twigs are dark brown, with wrinkles along their length. The leaves are chartaceous in texture and size ranging from 16.5–26 cm long and 5–10.5 cm wide, with an obovate blade shape. The dried leaves are glabrous and grey-brown or brown on the upper surface, while the lower surface is dirty brown or grey-brown with thick hairs. The midrib on the upper surface is a little bit immersed, but it is prominent and smooth on the lower surface. The yellowish outer petals are lanceolate in shape measuring about 24–37 mm long and 5–7.5 mm wide. The outer petals have a fleshy or leathery texture and they are covered with thick red-brown hairs on both sides. On the other hand, the inner petals are ovate, measuring about 10–12 mm long and 5 mm wide, coated with red-brown tomentum. More than ten subglobose to ellipsoidal monocarps, 8-10 mm long and 6-8 mm wide, are produced by this species. They will dry to a dark brown with fine irregular bumps and will be glabrous. Each monocarp usually contains one seed, although it can occasionally produce two seeds that are glabrous and have either smooth or fine wrinkles. The seeds are around 10 mm long and 7.5 mm wide. This species is found growing in lowland to lower montane forests. It is native to Sabah, Sarawak, and Kalimantan where it can be found at altitudes up to 1,200 m a.s.l. (Turner et al., 2014).
