Description

Guioa pleuropteris or more commonly known as Kelentit Nyamok Laut in Malay, is a type of shrub to small trees that can grow up to 15 m tall, with a diameter up to 3 m. The species epithet is derived from two Greek words, ‘pleuron’ meaning lateral growth, while ‘-pteron’ meaning wing, the combination of these words refer to the winged leaf rachis of this species. It has dark brown outer bark with white or grey spots. The bark is smooth to sometimes irregularly fluted. Its compound leaves consist of two to three pairs of opposite to alternate leaflets, and some glandular hairs appear near the midrib. The fragrant, white flowers are measured around 3-4.2 mm wide. The fruits are bright red when ripe. This species is distributed in Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia (except Perlis and Perak), Borneo, Singapore and the Philippines (van Welzen, 2017).
