Description

Lithocarpus brochidodromus is an evergreen tree in the Fagaceae family. The species epithet brochidodromus is derived from the Latin word “loop-veined”, which refers to the leaves. This tree may reach a height of 30 m tall with a trunk diameter of up to 55 cm. The flaky bark is brownish or greyish and the sapwood is brownish or whitish in colour. Its coriaceous leaves are rigid. Both male and female flowers are solitary on the rachis. Other than that, male flowers have acute perianth lobes while female flowers have obtuse perianth lobes. Its dark brown acorns are ovoid to roundish in shape with thin wall and most of the part is free from the cupule (Soepadmo & Saw, 2000).

Lithocarpus brochidodromus is usually found in primary and secondary lowland and hill mixed dipterocarp forests, including riparian forest at an altitude of 500 m. This species is distributed throughout Borneo. This tree has been recorded in Sapulut (Keningau), Ulu Tungud (Beluran) and Sg. Timbulanan (Labuk Sugut) in Sabah while in Sarawak, it is collected from Belaga district and Lambir NP in Miri district (Soepadmo & Saw, 2000).
