Description

Vatica yeechongii is a rare and small tree measuring between 8 and 15 m tall with 9 – 13 cm diameter. This tree is a species of the Dipterocarpaceae family and is endemic to Peninsular Malaysia (Saw, 2002). It does not have buttresses and is almost similar to other species such as V. haveilandii, V. venulosa and V. chartacea in terms of the leaves and fruits, but V. yeechongii has larger leaves and fruits in comparison.

The bark of V. yeechongii is smooth and the twigs are robust. The thick coriaceous leaves spread horizontally to slightly dropping. The blade shape is oblanceolate, measuring 44-84 x 10-16.5 cm, tapering narrowly to a cordate base, margin entire and the apex acuminate, which is tapering to a point. The midrib is very stout and prominent below. The five-petal flower is white to beige colour. The fruit can be found along the main rachis and first order branches (Saw, 2002).

This species was found in lowland dipterocarp forest, at about 50 m altitude. The seeds appear to be scattered by water as the tree have been observed only near rivers. The population sizes for this species are small and current management practices in one site do not help the regeneration process. The species has a very restricted distribution and small, fragmented population making it listed as Critically Endangered in the Malaysia Plant Red List.
