Description

Lithocarpus bullatus is an evergreen tree in the Fagaceae family. The species epithet bullatus is originated from the Latin word means “inflated” or “blistered”, referring to the leaf surface. This tree can grow up to 25 m tall with a trunk diameter of up to 40 cm. The greyish brown bark is fissured, smooth or lenticellate and has a reddish sapwood. Its coriaceous (leather-like texture) leaves can measure up to 7 cm in length. Male flowers are solitary along the rachis while female flowers are in clusters of 3 or solitary along the rachis. The perianth lobes of the male flowers are obtuse in shape while the perianth lobes of the female flowers are acute in shape. Its dark brown acorns are ovoid to conical in shape where most part is free from the saucer-shaped cupule (Soepadmo & Saw, 2000).

Lithocarpus bullatus is endemic to Borneo. It can be found in Sabah where it is common in Tambunan and Beluran districts while in Sarawak, it is uncommon and only known from Mount Mulu NP in Miri district. It grows on organic and ultrabasic soils in lower and upper montane forests, at 1,500-3,000 m altitude (Soepadmo & Saw, 2000).
