Description

Symplocos rubiginosa is a type of tree that can grow around 8-30 m tall, 15-50 cm diameter. The bark is smooth and brownish. The leaves are spirally arranged, sometimes clustered at intervals along the twig, and its colour is drying pale olive-green to yellow-green. The flowers are white when fresh. The fruits are ovoid, with white ripening pale blue and drying pale brown colour that measuring up to 1.3 x 0.8 cm.

The genus is derived from two Greek words, sym- meaning together, and plocos meaning connected, that refer to the stamens adnate to the corolla. The species epithet is derived from a Latin word, rubiginosus meaning rusty coloured, which refers to the indumentum.

This tree species is distributed in Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo (Sarawak, Brunei and Kalimantan). It occurs in mixed dipterocarp, kerangas and lower montane forests, at 50-1,100 m altitude (Pearce, 2004).
