Description

Mezzettia umbellata is a huge tree that can grow up to 30 m tall and about 90 cm in diameter. Mezzettia species are known by several local names, such as “karai” in the state of Sabah (Borneo), “kepayang babi” by the Malays and “barun” by the Ibans. Temuan tribe called M. umbellata with the words “kayu mehitam” and “perk sak”. The outer bark is dark grey, while the inner bark is light orange. The bark is smooth and has a spicy aroma. The leaves are elliptic, ovate or obovate shapes, measuring about 5.0–16.5 cm long and 2.5–6.0 cm wide. The texture of the leaves is chartaceous to subcoriaceous. The leaves are green, with a glossy upper surface and a paler colour below the surface. The flower is yellow-greenish and has six petals in two whorls of three. The outer petal is linear-lanceolate to linear, measuring 10.0–25.0 mm long and 1.0–1.5mm wide. On the other hand, the inner petal is ovate-lanceolate measuring 6.0–12.0 mm long and 1.0–2.0 mm wide. Compared to other Mezzettia species found in Malaysia, this species can produce 2–12 flowers per stalk. Other species of Mezzettia have only two to four flowers per stalk. In addition, this species has the longest pedicel and peduncles compared to other Mezzettia species found in Malaysia. The length of pedicel of M. umbellata can grow up to 4.0 cm, while the peduncles are measured from 2.0–19.0 mm. The fruit of M. umbellata is oval, measuring about 2.5–5.0 cm long and 1.5–2.0 in diameter. Each fruit contains one or two lenticular seeds, about 2.0–2.5 cm long, 1.5 cm wide and 1.0–1.2 cm thick. The seeds have a thick and hard outer shell. This species grows in lowlands, mostly in peat swamp forests. Other than that, it can also be found in kerangas forest and hill forests at an elevation of up to 1,100 m. The habitat of this species is confined to Borneo, which consists of Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Kalimantan (Turner, 2014).
