Description

Magnolia utilis is being described as a medium-sized tree that can grow up to 30 m tall and cylindrical bole measuring around 60 cm in diameter with no buttress. It has a grey bark with smooth to slightly cracking texture. Its elliptic or obovate leaves are arranged spirally and crowded at tips of twigs. The petiole of the leaves is about 20-45 mm long. The leaves have a short acuminate shape at the apex with acumen 3-15 mm in length. It has a pale yellow and fragrant flower that borne at the end of the branch with 3 inner tepals and two outer tepals in whorls obovate arrangement. The fruit is cylindrical containing 4-6 mm long seed with a coral-red sarcotesta (Nooteboom, 2012).

This species is frequently encountered in Myanmar, Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo (Sabah and Sarawak), where it is known to inhabit the lower montane forest at 750-1,200 m altitude (Nooteboom, 2012).
