Description

Callicarpa longifolia is a straggling shrub that grows up to 6 m tall. Due to its sprawling habits, this species often scrambles over other vegetation. The stems are about 1-6 cm in diameter. But, according to Fern (2014), it can be up to 11 cm in diameter. As they grow, the stems will become woodier and approximately glabrous. The leaves are usually equal to subequal pairs, with elliptic to narrowly ovate in shape. The petioles are measured around 1-2.5 cm. The flowers have narrow cupular sepals that are measured around 1 mm long with 4 shallow lobes marked with thickened tips. The outer surface of the flower is covered with short hairs. Its petals range from pale pink to lilac, 2-3 mm long. Meanwhile, the fruits are typically wide and globose, turning white colour as they ripen (Bramley, 2022). Compared to the other fruits in the Callicarpa genus, C. longifolia is the only species with fruits that are white in colour rather than typically reddish or purplish colour. According to Bramley (2011), the fruits are also fleshier.

This species is preferred to be known as Tampang besi puteh in Malay. It can be seen growing in villages or mostly in disturbed areas like secondary forests and roadsides. The plants are distributed in India, Indo-China, and also widespread in Thailand, throughout Malesia, northern Australia and Peninsular Malaysia as well.
