Description

Pyrrosia longifolia is a type of fern that belongs to the family Polypodiaceae. The genus Pyrrosia is derived from the Greek word, pyrrho meaning reddish; while the species epithet comes from two Latin words, longa means long, and folium means frond.

This fern has long-creeping rhizomes which are measured around 1.8-2.7 mm thick. The rhizome scales are measured around 1-3.4 mm long, appressed, dark brown or blackish with a hyaline margin. The fronds are monomorphic and have a hanging down habit. The sori are apical, closely packed and deeply sunken.

Pyrrosia longifolia is distributed from Indo-China, throughout Malesia, to Australia and the Pacific Island. It is commonly found on trees in open places, rubber plantations, in various forest types, from sea level to around 1,400 m altitude, and rarely lithophytic of terrestrial. Its conservation status is Least Concern in Peninsular Malaysia (Hovenkamp, 2013).
