Description

Castanopsis buruana is usually called as Berangan in Malay and Kogopon in Dusun. It is an evergreen tree that can grow up to 30 m tall and 60 cm in diameter. The bark is often smooth or sometimes scaly and brown in colour while the inner bark is reddish or whitish. It has a white sapwood. The twigs are minutely lenticellate. The leaves are ovate to elliptic, coriaceous (having the texture of leather) with 11 to 18 mm long of petioles. The male flowers grow in clusters of 3 to 4 along the rachis while the female flowers grow in solitary along the rachis. The cupules are ovoid and subsessile. There is only one ovoid seed with thin shell in each cupule (Soepadmo & Saw, 2000).

Castanopsis buruana can be found in Borneo, Sulawesi and Maluku. In Sabah, it is known only from Padang Pentululungan in Ranau district and Kampung Kitau in Kenangau district. This tree inhabits the primary lowland and hill mixed dipterocarp forests at an altitude up to 450 m (Soepadmo & Saw, 2000).
