Description

Shorea leprosula, also known as Light red meranti or 'Meranti Tembaga' is an emergent tree belongs to light red meranti group (Soepadmo et al., 2004). It can grow up to 60 m in height and 1.5 m in diameter with buttressing up to 2 m tall. It has a tall and cylindrical bole with deep and wide v-section fissures on its bark. The ovate-oblong leaf blade measures 8-14 x 3.5-5.5 cm with an obtuse or broadly acuminate leaf base. The flowers are small and measure up to 6 x 3 mm with pale yellow petals (Ashton, 2004). This species is very common where it can be found in Peninsular Malaysia, Peninsular Thailand Sumatra and Borneo from the lowland to hill forests which up to 1,000 m altitude (Pooma & Newman, 2017). In Malaysia, there is an estimated 7.4 million stem of Shorea leprosula in reserve protected areas. Due to this reason, this dipterocarp tree is assessed as Least Concern (Chua et al., 2010).
