Description

The genus Actinidia consists of about 30 species globally (Briggs, 2011) and within Actinidia latifolia there are 2 varieties; var. latifolia and var. mollis. However, only Actinidia latifolia var. latifolia is recorded in Peninsular Malaysia (Kiew et.al., 2013). Actinidia latifolia var. latifolia is a climbing shrub that belongs to the family of Actinidiaceae. It can be recognised by the shape of the leaf blade which is ovate to broadly ovate or obovate with greenish on the upper side and pale red to greenish-red on the underside of the leaf. The leaves’ surface is either smooth or have very short fine erect hair. The inflorescence is brownish with axillary 10 or more flowers. The fruit is in berry form, brown in colour with spots and smooth without hair (Kiew et.al., 2013).

This plant inhabits lowland dipterocarp forest and lower montane forest at an altitude of 850 -to 1800 m. It is commonly grows on logged-over forest and along road side of the forest edge.
