Description
The Common Minke Whale (Balaenoptera acutorostra) is the smallest of the rorquals with a total length of around 7-8m. This whale is quite similar to the Antarctic Minke Whale, B. bonaerensis. To distinguish the Common Minke Whale from other whales, it lacks a banding pattern at the pale flippers. Also, it is an asymmetrically-coloured baleen, where the front of the mouth is white, the back is dark grey, and the right side is whiter than the left side. It feeds mainly on krill in the south and small shoaling fish in the north (Francis, 2010).
The Common Minke Whale's distribution range ranges from Arctic waters to tropical waters, including Indian Ocean. It was recorded off the coasts of Malacca and Penang in Peninsular Malaysia (Francis, 2010). It is not at risk at the global level, but some populations are threatened by fishing and harvesting of marine resources (IUCN, 2018).
