Description
Pelargopsis capensis commonly known as Stork-billed Kingfisher is a species of bird that lives in a variety of well-wooded habitats near lakes, rivers or coasts. It also can be found near mangroves, agricultural land near the sea including rice fields and coconut plantations.
The Stork-billed Kingfisher has green upperparts, blue wings and tail, and a brown head (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012). Its underparts and neck are buffs. It has a coral-red bill with a black tip and bright red legs. The characteristics of male and female are similar, although the female's bill may be noticeably heavier than her mate's.
This species hunts frogs, crabs, rodents and young birds but they are predominantly fish-eaters. Therefore, they have a very large bill that makes a formidable weapon for dealing with crabs and fishes.
