Scientifically known as Butorides striata or Pucung Keladi in Malay, this heron is a small, stocky build seabird mainly found in various wetlands like mangroves, mudflats, riverbanks, drains, sandy beaches and reservoirs. It is known to live solitarily preying for small fish in shallow water. This species never forms flocks but feeds together in a large numbers especially with the arrival of migratory populations during winter (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993; Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012). B. striata will fly off with a loud and clear high-pitched ‘keeyow’ sound when disturbed.
This Little Heron appears to have grey-blue plumage, black cap and white scales on wings. It also has a whitish colour on the throat and ear coverts with yellow shade on legs and lores (the region between the eye and bill on the side of the bird’s head). Also, it has a dark brown wing covert with greenish gloss and yellowish white streaks. Meanwhile, the juvenile has a dark brown plumage, buff streaks on underparts and buff spots on wing coverts.
