Description

Lithocarpus caudatifolius is an evergreen tree in the Fagaceae family. In Latin, the specific epithet caudatifolius means “leaf with caudate apex”. It can reach a height of 30 m (100 ft.) tall with a trunk diameter of 60 cm (24 in). The greyish brown bark is scaly or smooth or fissured. The leaves have leather-like texture. On the rachis, both male and female flowers are arranged in solitary. Male flowers have obtuse perianth lobes, whereas female flowers have acute perianth lobes. Its brown acorn is in ovoid to conical or rarely obovoid in shape. Most part of the acorn is not protected by the saucer-shaped cupule (Soepadmo & Saw, 2000).

Borneo and the Philippines are home for Lithocarpus caudatifolius. This species is very popular in Sabah. In Sarawak, it is only documented from Kuching and Marudi districts. This tree can be found in primary and secondary mixed dipterocarp forest to lower montane forest at an altitude of up to 1,400 m (Soepadmo & Saw, 2000).
