Description
This small-sized bird is measuring about 13 cm in length. It has brown plumages that heavily scaled and streaked with white. The male can be differentiated by a female by the red patch behind its eye. This species is a common inhabitant of tidal mangroves and coastal woodlands. Another species of woodpecker, the Grey-capped Woodpecker which has a very similar look is an inhabitant of lowland rainforest in Peninsular Malaysia (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993).
