Taxonomy

Description

Agrionoptera insignis (Grenadier) is a species of dragonfly in the family Libellulidae. Its hindwings may measure up to 30 mm in male and 33 mm in female. The male has a thin red abdomen with swollen basally, and robust, metallic synthorax with mottled yellow marking while the female has orange brown abdomen and shape like male. It also has similar but duller yellow markings on its metallic green synthorax (Orr, 2005).

Agrionoptera insignis normally breeds in lowland forest marshes, sluggish streams and shady drains in the disturbed country. It can also be found on the landward margin of mangroves. This species is widespread in tropical Asia and Australasia but restricted to Sundaland and mainland tropical Asia east of India (Orr, 2005). It is threatened by deforestation and possibly plantation establishment, some island populations may be threatened by global warming (Dow, 2011).
