Description
Chalcoparia singalensis or commonly known as the Ruby-cheeked Sunbird is a species of bird belongs to the Nectariniidae family. Also known as kelicap pipi merah in Malay, C. singalensis can be found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand and Vietnam. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, mangrove forests, and moist montane forests.
The Ruby-cheeked sunbird feeds on insects, including caterpillars, and probably spiders (Araneae), fruit, pollen and nectar. In term of appearance, the male has more colourful and attractive plumages compared to the female. It has overall metallic green upperparts and yellow underparts with striking ruby cheeks. The female and juvenile are duller with the female sporting the orange throat similar to the male.
