Description
Lonchura atricapilla is a small passerine bird measuring around 11-12 cm in length. It is more commonly known as chestnut munia or black-headed munia due to its chestnut brown body, wings and tail, and black head respectively. It also has a distinctive light grey beak. Only the adult male chestnut munia sings. This species juvenile's head lacks the black colour of the adult form and has a pale brown body. The chestnut munia occurs in India, Nepal, China to south-east Asia. It can be seen near grassy areas, reeds, rice fields, forest edges, mangrove edges and scrub brush. Chestnut munias live in pairs or small flocks and mainly feed on large grain millets, sprouted seeds and greens.
