Description
Lonchura oryzivora is known as Java Sparrow or Ciak Jawa in Malay (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012). It is a small passerine bird that can reach up to 16 cm in length. L. oryzivora has pale grey plumage, pale pinkish lower belly and white under tail coverts. It also has a red-pink bill, eye circles and legs; and a black head with broad white cheek. Both sexes look alike but differ in beak shape and colour. The beak size of a cock is slightly larger and more bulbous, while the red colour beak is deeper than the hen’s. The Java Sparrow is a native species and endemic to the islands of Java, Bali (IUCN, 2018). However, it has been introduced to other countries as a result of cage-bird trade. Generally, Java Sparrow feeds on ripening paddy and food scraps on the ground (Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012).
