Description

Tramea transmarina, or commonly known as Red Glider Dragonfly is a species of dragonfly in the family Libellulidae. This large libellulid can easily be recognized by the dark patch at base of hindwing with the hindwing measuring up to 43 mm. The female has brown abdomen with more diffuse hindwing patch. The larva is very similar to the Hydrobasileus croceus (Amber-winged Glider) but lacking dorsal spines (Orr, 2005).

The Red Glider Dragonfly is normally breed in well-vegetated lakes, ponds and drains with altitudes up to 2,000 m above sea level but generally breeds in the lowlands. Adults sail conspicuously over lakes, forest clearings and mountain tops. It is widespread in tropical Asia and Australasia (Orr, 2005).
