Northern Shoveler (Spatula clypeata) also known as shoveler, is a common and widespread duck. This species of duck can grow up to 50 cm and can be differentiated from others by its large spatulate bill. The male has two forms, the breeding male, and the eclipse male. The breeding male has a black bill, dark glossy green head, chestnut belly and flanks. Meanwhile, the eclipse male is like the female but it has yellow iris with flanks tinged rusty buff. On the contrary, female northern shoveler has brown plumage with darker brown markings on its mantle, breast and flanks. It has a blackish bill with orange sides. Both male and female of this species has orange legs.. Northern Shoveler uses its bill to feed in shallow waters. Its diets include minute aquatic animals, seed and aquatic plants.
