Taxonomy

Description

Vestalis amoena (Charming Flashwing) is a damselfly species in family Calopterygidae. It has deeper metallic green body and the green marking on thorax is almost continuous, not as that of Vestalis gracilis (Clear-winged Flashwing). Its hindwing may measure up to 34mm. However, V. amoena is very similar to Vestalis amethystina (Common Flashwing) in overall morphology. Nevertheless, the male of both the species is readily to be distinguished by the shape of anal appendages. V. amoena has slightly shorter inferior anal appendage and the superior anal appendage is less in-curved than V. amethystina. The females of both species are basically indistinguishable. Charming Flashwing is commonly found on clear lowland forest streams including disturbed forests with the altitude up to 700 m above sea level (Orr, 2005). It is widespread in Sundaland except Java (Orr, 2005). Charming Flashwing has been found on streams in Acacia plantation in Sarawak and rubber plantation in Peninsular Malaysia (Dow, 2011).
