Description

Desmos cochinchinensis is a mempisang climber and known as larak salai or kenanga hutan in Peninsular Malaysia. Desmos in Greek means bond, particularly for a fruit. Its bright yellow flowers have a pleasant cananga-like smell. The flowers are formed by three pale green sepals with three outer and inner yellowish petals each. The yellow-flowered plant is typically a climber on trees but it may also be a shrub. The Vietnemese use the dried flowers to treat cough while the Chinese use the roots to treat malaria. Sometimes, the roots are boiled to treat fever. One of the unique appearances of the plant is the glossy green-yellow fruits similar to bracelets of beans and pearls (Ummul-Nazrah & Nadiah, 2016).
