Taxonomy

Description

Phyllothemis eltoni is a species of dragonfly in the family Libellulidae. Its male hindwing may measure up to 22 mm. It has a small, slender abdomen with distinct pale green spotting, narrow wings and very long hind legs with dense and short spines. In Peninsular Malaysia, there is only one record exists for genus Phyllothemis. The species can be differentiated by P. raymondi from Sumatra by its facial marking, superior anal appendage and its size which is slightly larger than P. eltoni. This dragonfly is rare and commonly found in lowland forest habitats. It is widespread in Peninsular Malaysia, western Thailand and Burma (Orr, 2005). P. eltoni appears to be present in small streams in lowland forest and is therefore likely to be threatened by habitat loss from deforestation (Dow, 2011).
