The average size of the Green Pit Viper or also called the White-lipped Pit Viper is about 60 – 95 cm. This species has a fairly stout body with keeled scales. Its triangular head is distinct from the neck and the coloration of head and body are yellowish green or green. The head sides underneath the eyes are yellow, white, pale green or yellowish green. The ventral scales are pale yellow and the dorsal of its tail is reddish-brown. Pit organs are presented in front of the eyes (Sibunruang et al., 2013). It hunts on mice, birds, lizards and frogs at night on the ground and spends daytime resting in vegetation.
The Green Pit Viper has a green coloration making it difficult to see in the trees. Some non-venomous green snakes are usually misidentified as this viper. This viper has a red tail which is the main difference between it and other non-venomous species. This tail is sometimes used as a lure to attract prey such as birds because it resembles a worm. This snake has hemotoxic venom that attacks the blood and causes significant swelling.
