The cap of this fungus is bivalve shell-shaped, fan-shaped, hemispherical, velvety becoming glabrous with age and purplish brown to dark violet with concentric zones of purplish brown to reddish brown near the acute margin. The pore surface is pale greyish purple, drying purplish to greyish brown and bruising black while the pores are round, tiny and visible only under a hand lens. The flesh is tough and brown to purplish brown. This fungus grows in overlapping layers on well decayed wood and stumps causing a white rot.
