Taxonomy

Description

Rhyothemis pygmaea is a species of dragonfly belonging to the family Libellulidae. Its hindwing may measure up to 22.5 mm. The male individual has bronze wings with purplish reflex but lacking distinct markings and the abdomen is less than twice the breadth of hindwing near the base. Female has similar characteristics to male. It likes to perch in sunny patches with depressed or angled wings away from the sun (Orr, 2005).

This dragonfly is commonly found in runnels forested swamps and clear rocky streams at the margins of lowland dipterocarp forests. It is widespread in Sundaland (except Java) and eastward to New Guinea which is displaying considerable geographic variation (Orr, 2005).
