Taxonomy

Description

Orchithemis pruinans is a species of dragonfly in the family Libellulidae. It has a thinner abdomen and a strong sub-basal blue band. Its hindwing may measure up to 26 mm which is larger than O. pulcherrima. It can easily be separated from other small blue libellulids by its narrow wings. The female has brown color and likes to defend on small pools and slow-moving channels. This species is uncommon and local in lowland alluvial forest swamps. It is widespread in Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo (Orr, 2005). Although O. pruinans has been categorized as the Least Concern species, it is locally threatened by deforestation and large-scale hydro-electric projects (Dow, 2011).
