Description
Locally known as Sintar Kecil in Malay, the Baillon’s Crake is a small waterbird measuring only 18–19 cm in length. This crake breeds in Africa, Europe, temperate Asia, northern India and discontinuously to Australia and New Zealand, where the northern population will migrate to tropical Africa, South and South-East Asia to the Greater Sundas during winter. It can usually be seen solitarily, inhabiting reservoirs, ponds and swampy ground (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993; Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012).
This species can be identified by the distinctive small greenish bill with white streaks on the upperparts. It also has slaty grey tinge on breast and head, faint brownish eye line with black and white barred on flanks and undertail coverts (Strange & Jeyarajasingam, 1993; Jeyarajasingam & Pearson, 2012).
