Description

In the Kelabit ethnic group, Lithocarpus confertus is well-known as saled birar. The specific epithet confertus means “crowded” in Latin. It is a tree with a bole diameter of 60 cm and a height of up to 30 m tall. The greyish brown bark is seen as densely lenticellate or scaly and has a white sapwood. The twigs are densely covered in matted, woolly hairs. The stipules of this tree are lanceolate while its leathery-textured leaves are ovate to elliptic in shape. Male flowers are grouped in clusters of 3 along the rachis with obtuse perianth lobes while female flowers are arranged in solitary along the rachis with acute perianth lobes. Not all part of the ovoid acorn is inside the saucer-shaped cupule that is distributed in solitary along the rachis (Soepadmo & Saw, 2000).

Lithocarpus confertus is endemic to Borneo. It inhabits primary and secondary mixed dipterocarp, peat swamp and lower montane forests, at 900-1,200 m altitude, on sandstone-derived and clay soils. In Sabah, it is very popular in Ranau, Sandakan, Tambunan and Keningau districts because its trunks and branches are used as bed logs in mushroom cultivation. This species is uncommon in Sarawak. It is only recorded for Bario, Lawas, Kapit and Sri Aman districts (Soepadmo & Saw, 2000).
