Description

Lithocarpus encleisacarpus is an evergreen tree in the Fagaceae family. The species epithet encleisacarpus comes from the Greek word which means “enclosed fruit” referring to the acorn that is completely enclosed by the cupule. The cupule, on the other hand, is not fused to the acorn and often becomes irregularly dehiscent (the cupule splits open when it is ripe). The degree to which the cupule encloses the acorn differs depending on where it is found.  This tree can grow up to 40 m tall with a trunk diameter of up to 75 cm. The bark is greyish brown while its inner bark is yellowish with whitish sapwood. The surface of the bark is smooth or scaly and sparsely lenticellate. The coriaceous (leather-like texture) leaves have obscure tertiary web-like reticulations. Its petiole measures up to 15 mm long. Male flowers are arranged in clusters of 3 along the rachis with obtuse perianth lobes while female flowers are arranged in solitary along the rachis with acute perianth lobes. Other than that, cupules are solitary but arranged closely together along the rachis, with stalk which measures from 10 to 15 mm long. Its dark brown acorn is almost fully covered by the deeply cup-shaped cupule (Soepadmo & Saw, 2000).

Lithocarpus encleisacarpus grows naturally in the primary hill mixed dipterocarp forest to lower montane forest at elevations from 1,000 to 1,500 m. This species is widely distributed in Thailand, Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore and Borneo. It is known from Ranau, Tawau, Sandakan and Beaufort districts in Sabah while in Sarawak, this species is usually found in Kapit, Kuching, Miri and Limbang districts. The timber of this tree is locally used for house construction and as firewood. Tannins found in the bark are used for dyeing cotton and rattans (Soepadmo & Saw, 2000).
