Description

The epithet ‘benstonei' was named after Benjamin Clemens Stone, who is a botanist and one of the first collectors of the species (Clarke, 1999). This species is known to be endemic to Peninsular Malaysia where it grows in hill forest from 450-1,000 m altitude (Nooteboom, 2012).

Nepenthes benstonei may reach up to 10 m tall with cylindrical or slightly tapering stem measuring about 4–8 mm in diameter. Its stem and leaves are dull green with a white-blue waxy sheen. The lower pitchers come in a variety of colours, from green to yellow to brick red throughout on the outside with red blotches on the inner surfaces and underside of the lid. The lower pitchers are ovoid in the lower part and cylindrical above, reaching up to 15 cm long and 5 cm wide with a noticeable haunch in the middle. The pitcher has a pair of fringed wings up to 4 mm wide. It has round to ovate mouth that is slanted throughout and a cylindrical, yellow-white peristome with short, broad teeth along its inner margin. It also has a broad, ovate lid with lacking hairs underside and distinct basal keel, densely covered with large elliptic nectar gland. Meanwhile, the upper pitchers have light yellow green throughout on the outside with red blotches on the inner surface and underside of the lid (Nooteboom, 2012).
