Description

Shorea macroptera, or known as Meranti melantai in Malay is a large tree of dipterocarp species that can grow between 40-50 m in height. The diameter of its straight, cylindrical bole can be measure about 70-150 cm with buttresses up to 2.5 m high (Soepadmo et al., 2004). It flowers and set seeds between October and February which occur every 3 to 4 years (Krishnapillay et al., 1998). Its wood is a source of light red meranti timber. Meranti melantai is threatened by habitat loss due to logging and deforestation. It is globally assessed as Least Concern (LC) in IUCN Red List (Newman & Pooma, 2017).
