Description

Shorea hemsleyana is known by the locals as cengal pasir daun besar or meranti daun besar due to its large leaves with hairy undersides. Shorea hemsleyana is a fairly large tree with a dense, hemispherical crown and can grow up to 20 metres tall. The bole is cylindrical and straight with low, rounded buttresses and can reach 40 cm in diameter. Its pinkish-red flowers can be found in abundance on the forest floor during its flowering season. This species also has a large fruit with an ovoid or cylindrical nut and has rudimentary wings. The kernel fats in the fruits are used by indigenous communities in Sarawak to flavour boiled rice (Symington, 2004).

This species is found in Peninsular Thailand, Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia (Perak) and Sarawak in lowland dipterocarp forests including swamp areas. Due to extremely small population sizes and restricted distribution, this species is categorised as Critically Endangered in the Malaysia Plant Red List (Chua et al., 2010; Yong et al., 2011).
