Description

Lithocarpus coopertus is an evergreen tree that can reach up to 35 m tall with a bole diameter of 70 cm. The specific epithet coopertus is from the Latin word, meaning “completely concealed” which refers to the acorn that is fully protected by the cupule. Its greyish brown bark is smooth or flaky and sometimes lenticellate. It has a white sapwood. The leaves are thin-coriaceous and sparsely to densely appressed tomentose with stellate hairs on both surfaces. Male flowers and female flowers are arranged singly along the rachis. Male flowers have acute perianth lobes while female flowers have obtuse perianth lobes. The cupules are also arranged singly along the rachis. The brown acorns are ovoid to conical in shape and enclosed completely by the cupules (Soepadmo & Saw, 2000).

Lithocarpus coopertus inhabits lowland to hill mixed dipterocarp forest, including kerangas andswamp forests, up to 900 m altitude. It is widely distributed in Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo and the Philippines. This species is common and widespread throughout Sabah and Sarawak. In Borneo, timbers of this tree are being harvested by local people to be used as firewood and in house construction (Soepadmo & Saw, 2000).
