Willughbeia coriacea or commonly known as akar getah gaharu, is a large woody climber stemming up to 30 m long and 10 cm in diameter. It has round shape fruits with sticky white sap and can be eaten. Monkeys and bats regularly feed on its sweet and sour ripe fruits (Izzauddin et al., 2019). The latex obtained from this plant is used in medicinal and also make a good quality rubber until its use is reduced with the growing popularity of the Brazilian rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) and the advent of synthetic rubber (Tropical Plants Database, 2020).
Willughbeia coriacea exists in both primary and secondary forest up to 1600 m altitude in well drained soils not suffering from stagnant water. It is widely distributed in Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan and Brunei (Royal Belum-Temengor Rainforest: The Hidden Treasure of Perak, 2019).
