Description

The Dipterocarp species, commonly known as Balau Hitam is a large tree that exceeds 95 cm in diameter. It inhabits lowland to hill forest at altitudes to 600 m and can be found in Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo (Chua et al., 2010; Yong et al., 2011). This species is common and produces the balau timber. Due to population reduction caused by habitat loss and timber exploitation, Balau Hitam  is categorized as Endangered (Yong et al., 2011).
