Description

Mezzettia havilandii is a large tree that can grow more than 35 m tall and a diameter of more than 50 cm. Mezzettia species are known by several local names, such as “karai” in the state of Sabah (Borneo), “kepayang babi” by the Malays and “barun” by the Ibans. The outer bark is dark grey, while the inner bark is pale yellow. The texture of the leaves is chartaceous to coriaceous. This species typically has elongated leaves that are 5–13 cm long and 2–5 cm wide. Sometimes, the leaves can also be elliptical, lanceolate or oblanceolate in shape. The upper surface of leaves is usually glossy. The flower is fragrant, dark yellow, and has six alternating large and small petals. There may be between two and four flowers on each of the stalks, which are usually on the woody tubercles behind the leaves. This small flower has a long, pale green pedicel that varies from 10–30 mm, while the peduncle connecting the flowers to the tubers is only about 1 mm long. The large petal is obovate-lanceolate, 6.0–8.0 mm long and 1.0–2.0 mm wide. However, the small petal is oblong-shaped, measuring 4.0–5.5 mm long and 1.5–2.0 mm wide. The fruit is round-shaped, measuring about 4–5 cm in diameter. Each fruit contains two lenticular seeds, which is about 3.5 cm long, 3 cm wide and 2 cm thick. This species grows in lowland forests consisting of inland forests, peat swamp forests and kerangas forests. It is found in Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak), Brunei and Indonesia (Kalimantan and Sumatra).
