Description
Mezzettia macrocarpa is a large tree that can grow up to 40 m tall. Mezzettia species are known by several local names, such as “karai” in the state of Sabah (Borneo), “kepayang babi” by the Malays and “barun” by the Ibans. The species epithet, macrocarpa comes from the Greek words, “makro” meaning big, and “karpos” meaning fruit, referring to the large fruits of this species. The dull brown fruits are egg-shaped and the widest part towards the tip, measuring about 10 cm long and 8 cm in diameter. The outer bark is greyish brown. The leaves are typically elongated to lanceolate shapes that are 8–16 cm long and 4–6 cm wide. The texture of the leaves is chartaceous to subcoriaceous and smooth. The leaves’ upper surface seems glossy. On the other hand, the flower is soft-scented, light yellowish green, and has six alternating large and small petals. There may be between two and four flowers on each of the stalks, which are usually on the woody tubercles behind the leaves. This small flower has a pale green pedicel that varies from 4–14 mm long, while the peduncle connecting the flowers to the tubers is about 2 mm long. The large petal is narrowly ovate, 6–9 mm long and 2.0–2.5mm wide. On the other hand, the small petal is ovate-oblong measuring 5–8 mm long and 1.5–2.5 mm wide. Each fruit contains two lenticular seeds, about 6–9 cm long, 4.5–6 cm wide and 3.5 cm thick. The seeds have a thick and hard outer shell. This species grows in the lowland forests of Borneo encompassing Sarawak, Brunei and Kalimantan.
